Fine Art by Upside Down Owl Studios

Yo! I’m Brando—the artist behind Upside Down Owl Studios. My journey in art started when I was ten years old, sketching constantly and taking every art class I could find. That early passion turned into a career in design, and eventually, into a personal art practice that brings everything full circle.

In 1998, I enrolled in my first graphic design course. From there, I gained hands-on experience at a small screen print shop and apprenticed in a tattoo studio—two very different environments that helped shape my creative approach. By the early 2000s, I was working full-time as a self-employed designer. In 2010, I officially launched Upside Down Owl Studios, focusing on branding and apparel with a bold, recognizable style.

For a long time, I focused almost entirely on commercial work—but during the COVID lockdowns, I found the time and space to reconnect with personal art. That’s when I started developing my own process for stencil painting: I draw each layer digitally in vector format, cut it with a vinyl plotter, and build it up with layered acrylics. The result is a sharp, high-impact style rooted in pop iconography, nostalgia, and clean graphic design.

In recent years, I’ve also stepped into mural work—painting my first in 2023 and another in 2024, with new projects on the horizon. While murals are still a newer part of my journey, I’m excited about the possibilities they bring.

Today, fine art is a growing part of what I do. Whether it’s a canvas piece, a limited edition stencil painting, or something bigger, I bring the same creativity and dedication that sparked all of this when I was a kid with a pencil.

Thanks for checking out my work. If you’re interested in an original piece or have an idea for a project, let’s talk.

LAYER BY LAYER

MACHINE CUT STENCIL PAINTINGS

Stencil Works is a collection of paintings built around a process I’ve developed using machine-cut stencils and layered acrylics. Every piece starts as a vector drawing, where I break the image down into layers, cut each one in vinyl, and paint them one by one onto MDF panels. It’s a method that gives me clean lines, tight detail, and full control over how the image comes together.

This approach lets me play with bold colors, contrast, and texture in a way that feels graphic but still painterly. A lot of my work pulls from pop culture, but it’s not limited to that—sometimes it’s original ideas, sometimes it’s just something I think would look cool on a wall.

At the heart of it, stencil painting is about building something piece by piece. It’s technical, yeah—but also expressive, and super satisfying to see come to life layer by layer.

Most of my stencil paintings are made to order and available in three formats:

  • 24″ x 24″ – Full-size editions, bold and built to stand out
    (Limited to 10 per design)

  • 12″ x 12″ – Smaller format with the same energy
    (Limited to 20 per design)

  • Cut-Out Stencil Paintings – One-of-a-kind works created by cutting shapes from 3/4″ MDF and stencil painting them. These sculptural pieces push beyond the square format—for example, a 55″ tall Elvis Pez Dispenser and a pair of 50″ wide train cars featuring different versions of my Saibōgu girl.

Turnaround time is typically 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the piece and my current workload. If you’re interested in purchasing or commissioning a piece, feel free to reach out. Let’s make something rad together.
